On February 28, 2023, the International School held its first series of lectures on teaching skills in English at Academic Seminar Hall 4-205, Guangzhou Campus. Dr. Hashmi, the Vice Dean and Professor of Economics offered a lecture, titled "How to be a Qualified English Teacher in Higher Education".

Dr. Shuze Tang, Dean and Professor chaired this seminar. Faculty, staff members and students from the International School and other Schools participated in this seminar.

Hashmi first pointed out the common learning characteristics of Chinese students -, such as paying attention to the teacher but not being able to express their - opinion in the class, and insufficient participation in class activities. Addressing the issue, Based on his personal experiences, Dr.Hashmi introduced some specific suggestions about teaching in English - -In his opinion, the biggest learning hurdle is the classroom language. Teaching in English not only requires highest level of English proficiencies, but also requires certain , set of teaching skills that an instructor can combines with his Englishto professional knowledge of subjects, so that students are happily willing to listen and understand. Specifically, Hashmi suggested that in the classroom, teachers should use - simple everyday vocabulary when communicating with students - so that students can be engaged into the class. On the topic of professional knowledge, Hashmi also suggested that teachers should combine more real-life examples to deepen students' understanding of professional knowledge. The second is about class participation. Hashmi pointed out that students' class participation is the key concern of teaching effect evaluation. He also shared the design of teaching activity frequently used in his class -- group discussion. Teaching activities carried out in groups make it easier for students to participate in the class and foster their sense of cooperation. In groups, students are more courageous to express their own views and thoughts.

At the end of the seminar, Hashmi had a discussion with the teachers and students who participated in the lecture. The teachers also shared their experiences in teaching and said that they had a new understanding of teaching in English through the lecture.
